Was verstehen wir unter Global Health?
Global Health ist nach Beaglehole and Bonita (2010) die „partnerschaftliche transnationale Forschung und Aktion zur Verwirklichung des Ziels Gesundheit für Alle.“ Damit sind viele wesentliche Elemente angesprochen: Es geht um die Erkennung, Prävention und Lösung grenzüberschreitender Gesundheitsprobleme mit dem Ziel eines gerechten Zugangs zu Gesundheitsversorgung und gesunden Lebensbedingungen, oder - in anderen Worten - der weltweiten Verwirklichung des Menschenrechts auf Gesundheit. Während die Kontrolle von Pandemien, nicht zuletzt aufgrund von COVID-19, als globale Aufgabe erkannt und akzeptiert ist, gibt es viele weitere Herausforderungen, die nur mit einer solidarischen und globalen Anstrengung bewältigt werden können. Dazu gehören Gesundheit und Klimawandel, Migration, Ernährung, die globale Epidemie von nicht-infektiösen Erkrankungen und der Zugang zu qualitativ guten und akzeptablen Gesundheitsdiensten. Da diese Herausforderungen weit über die unmittelbaren Bereiche Gesundheit und Lebenswissenschaften hinausgehen, erfordert Global Health die multi- und interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Sektoren wie Umweltwissenschaften, Sozialwissenschaften, Politik, oder Recht. Als DTG-Ausschuss zu Global Health wollen wir hier eine Vermittlungsfunktion wahrnehmen.
Welchen Aufgaben widmet sich der Ausschuss?
Aktuelle und mögliche zukünftige Aufgaben sind:
● Vernetzung mit Initiativen zu Global Health innerhalb und außerhalb der DTG. Mitglieder des Ausschusses sind auch in zahlreichen anderen Global-Health-Initiativen engagiert (z.B. tropEd Network for Education in International Health, GLOHRA oder Global Health Hub Germany)
● Gesprächspartner und Berater für die Politik, Institutionen der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, Zivilgesellschaft und Öffentlichkeit
● Stellungnahmen und begleitende Initiativen zu aktuellen politischen Prozessen mit Global Health-Relevanz
● Repräsentation des Themenbereiches Global Health im Rahmen von Konferenzen und Tagungen von Gesellschaften mit tropenmedizinischer oder International-Health-Ausrichtung
● Förderung von Global Health Lehre in der medizinischen Aus- und Weiterbildung
Welchen Themenschwerpunkten widmet sich der Ausschuss?
Aktuelle und mögliche zukünftige Themenschwerpunkte sind:
● Antimicrobial Resistance im nationalen und internationalen Kontext
● Stellenwert von Global Health in der Bundespolitik vor dem Hintergrund der finanziellen Kürzungen
● Studie zur Beurteilung von Fundingmöglichkeiten
Wie arbeiten wir im Ausschuss?
Der Ausschuss trifft sich 3-4x im Jahr (überwiegend digital, nach Möglichkeit auch im Rahmen von Tagungen in Hybridform), um aktuelle und zukünftige Themen an der Schnittstelle von Global Health und Tropenmedizin zu diskutieren sowie Projekte in kollaborativer Zusammenarbeit umzusetzen. Zu gemeinsam identifizierten Themen und inhaltlichen Fragen möchte sich der Ausschuss positionieren und hierbei auch als Ansprechstelle für die DTG zur Verfügung stehen.

What Do We Mean by Global Health?
According to Beaglehole and Bonita (2010), Global Health is "collaborative transnational research and action for promoting health for all." This definition highlights many essential elements: it is about identifying, preventing, and solving cross-border health problems with the goal of equitable access to healthcare and healthy living conditions—or, in other words, the global realization of the human right to health.
While the control of pandemics—especially due to COVID-19—is now recognized and accepted as a global responsibility, there are many other challenges that can only be addressed through global solidarity and cooperation. These include health and climate change, migration, nutrition, the global epidemic of non-communicable diseases, and access to high-quality and acceptable healthcare services.
Since these challenges extend far beyond the immediate fields of health and life sciences, Global Health requires multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration with sectors such as environmental sciences, social sciences, politics, and law. As the DTG working group on Global Health, we see our role as one of facilitation and connection.
What Are the Working Group’s Tasks?
Current and potential future tasks include:
● Networking with Global Health initiatives within and outside the DTG. Members of the working group are also involved in numerous other Global Health initiatives (e.g., tropEd Network for Education in International Health, GLOHRA, or the Global Health Hub Germany)
● Serving as a discussion partner and advisor for policymakers, development cooperation institutions, civil society, and the general public
● Issuing statements and accompanying initiatives in response to current political processes relevant to Global Health
● Representing the field of Global Health at conferences and meetings of societies with a focus on tropical medicine or international health
● Promoting Global Health education in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training
What Are the Working Group’s Focus Areas?
Current and potential future focus areas include:
● Antimicrobial resistance in national and international contexts
● The significance of Global Health in German federal policy in light of budget cuts
● A study evaluating funding opportunities
How Does the Working Group Work?
The working group meets 3 to 4 times a year (primarily online, occasionally in hybrid form at conferences) to discuss current and future topics at the intersection of Global Health and tropical medicine and to implement projects through collaborative efforts. The committee aims to take positions on jointly identified topics and issues and to serve as a point of contact for the DTG in this regard.
