Der Ausschuss „NTD“ wurde im Januar 2024 zunächst als neue Arbeitsgruppe der jungen DTG gegründet und ist seit 2026 ein eigener Ausschuss.

Vernachlässigte Tropenerkrankungen („neglected tropical diseases“, NTDs) sowie ihre Kontrolle, Elimination und Eradikation stellen weltweit mit 1,7 Milliarden Betroffenen ein großes Problem dar, dessen medizinische sowie sozio-ökonomische Folgen vor allem junge Menschen betreffen werden. Um die gesetzten Ziele von der Kontrolle bis zur Ausrottung zu erreichen sind klinische und Forschungsbemühungen, aber auch das Bewusstsein für das Problem der NTDs und das Engagement für ihre Bekämpfung unerlässlich.

Die Ziele des Ausschusses sind:

1.        Hauptziel: „Awareness“ schaffen: Wir möchten Aufklärungsarbeit über das Thema der vernachlässigten Tropenkrankheiten leisten und darauf aufmerksam machen, wieso es von Bedeutung ist, ihre Kontrolle, Elimination und Eradikation anzustreben und voranzutreiben. Hierbei möchten wir über eine breite Vernetzung mit sowohl nationalen als auch internationalen NTD-Initiativen kooperieren.

Zielgruppen: Mediziner (Ärztinnen und Ärzte sowie Medizinstudierende, inklusive Veterinärmedizinerinnen und Veterinärmediziner) und weitere Studierenden- und Berufsgruppen, die sich mit der Thematik der NTDs befassen (Global Health, Gesundheitsökonomie, Epidemiologie u.a.). Ein weiterer Fokus soll zukünftig auf der Aufklärungsarbeit für Schülerinnen und Schüler liegen.

2.        Nebenziele: „advocacy, policy und capacity building“, Förderung des sozialen, klinischen und wissenschaftlichen Austausches von Kolleginnen und Kollegen national und international, Anregung interdisziplinärer Kooperationen zum Thema NTDs. Der Ausschuss setzt sich zudem im Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Projekte mit der Thematik der NTDs auseinander.

1)        NTD-Reihe in der FTR

Um die vernachlässigten Tropenkrankheiten einem breiten Publikum näherzubringen, erscheint seit 2025 in jeder Ausgabe der “Flugmedizin, Tropenmedizin, Reisemedizin” (FTR) unter Leitung des Ausschusses ein Übersichtsartikel über eine NTD, inkl. Interview mit einem Experten/einer Expertin auf dem Gebiet. Veröffentlichungen s.u.

2)        Datenerhebung „Burden of Disease“ für NTDs in Deutschland

Leitung: Dr. med. Viktoria Schneitler

NTDs kommen nicht nur in den Tropen vor – manche sind in Deutschland endemisch, andere nehmen aufgrund des Klimawandels und der Migration an Bedeutung zu. Das Projekt beschäftigt sich mit der Surveillance von NTDs in Deutschland. Erste Ergebnisse wurden bereits beim ECTMIH 2025 und beim ESCMID Global 2026 vorgestellt: ECTMIH 2025 | Programmpunkt - Burden of disease for NTDs in Germany

3)        Survey zur tropenmedizinischen Lehre an deutschen Hochschulen

Die Tropenmedizin findet trotz ihrer zunehmenden Bedeutung an deutschen Hochschulen weiterhin nur wenig Beachtung: Dies war die Beobachtung der Hamburger Studentengruppe „Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM)“, die hierauf eine Umfrage zur tropenmedizinischen Lehre in Deutschland auf den Weg bringen wollten. Ziel ist herauszuarbeiten, inwiefern diese optimiert werden kann und ihrer Bedeutung mehr Sichtbarkeit zu verleihen. Das Projekt ist eine Kooperation der UAEM und des Ausschusses NTD.

4)        NTD Youth Ambassador Programm

Leitung: Dr. med. Mirna Abd El Aziz & Dr. med. Sophie Schneitler

2025 wurde in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Netzwerk gegen Vernachlässigte Tropenkrankheiten (DNTDs) das erste deutsche „NTD Youth Ambassador“-Programm ins Leben gerufen. Ziel ist, junge Menschen an policy, advocacy und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit für NTDs heranzuführen und ihnen eine Plattform zum Netzwerken und zur Weiterentwicklung zu bieten.

5)        Deutsche NTD Jugendinitiative

Leitung: Jonas Lohmann & Leonie Maier

NTDs betreffen überproportional Kinder und junge Menschen. Daher ist es umso wichtiger, diesen eine Stimme zu verleihen. Die deutsche NTD Jugendinitiative wurde ursprünglich als AG innerhalb der jungen DTG gegründet und wird als eigenständige AG innerhalb des neuen Ausschusses NTD, in Kooperation mit der jungen DTG, weiterbestehen.

Die deutsche NTD Jugendinitiative war und ist aktiv am Aufbau eines internationalen „NTD Youth Initiative“ Netzwerks beteiligt. Im Rahmen regelmäßiger Treffen und Kooperationen mit globalen Jugendinitiativen wird die Vernetzung junger Leute gestärkt, um ihren Forderungen zur Bekämpfung der NTDs Gehör zu verschaffen.

Aus dieser Kooperation ist u.a. die “Global NTDs Youth Platform”, unter Federführung der japanischen „NTDs Youth Organization“ entstanden:

6)        Webinar-Serie „NTDs Around the World“

Leitung: Dr. med. Miriam Müller & Dr. med. Antonia Walther

In interdisziplinären Webinaren werden verschiedene Länder und Regionen sowie ihre NTDs beleuchtet. Dabei werden diese aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln betrachtet: Klinik, Wissenschaft, Public Health, Diagnostik, One Health uvm.

Die Webinarreihe findet in Kooperation mit FESTMIH statt.

English version: Working group for NTDs

The working group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) was initially established in January 2024 as a new working group within the Young DTG and has operated as a standalone committee since 2026.

NTDs - along with their control, elimination, and eradication - constitute a major global challenge, affecting 1.7 billion people worldwide; their medical and socio-economic consequences are impacting young people in particular. To achieve the established goals—ranging from disease control to complete eradication—clinical and research efforts are indispensable, as is raising awareness for NTDs and fostering a commitment to combating them.

The objectives of the committee are:

1.             Primary Objective: Raising awareness: We aim to conduct educational outreach regarding neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and to highlight the importance of striving for - and driving forward - their control, elimination, and eradication. In doing so, we seek to cooperate through extensive networking with both national and international NTD initiatives.

Target Groups: Medical professionals (physicians and medical students, including veterinarians) and other student and professional groups engaged with the subject of NTDs (e.g., Global Health, Health Economics, Epidemiology, etc.). In the future, an additional focus will be placed on educational outreach for pupils.

2.             Secondary Objectives: Advocacy, Policy, and Capacity Building; fostering social, clinical, and scientific exchange among colleagues - both nationally and internationally; and stimulating interdisciplinary collaborations on the topic of NTDs. Furthermore, the committee engages with the topic of NTDs within scientific projects.

1)        NTD Series in the FTR

To introduce neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) to a broad audience, a review article focusing on a specific NTD—including an interview with an expert in the field—has appeared in every issue of the journal “Flugmedizin, Tropenmedizin, Reisemedizin” (FTR) since 2025, under the guidance of the Committee. See below for publications.

2)        Data Collection: "Burden of Disease" for NTDs in Germany

Lead: Dr. med. Viktoria Schneitler

NTDs are not limited to the tropics - some are endemic in Germany, while others are gaining significance due to climate change and migration. This project focuses on the surveillance of NTDs in Germany. 3)        Survey on Tropical Medicine Education at German Universities

Lead: Dr. med. Anna Schwabe, Dr. med. Sophie Schneitler & Dr. med. dent. Stephanie Pankow

Despite its growing importance, tropical medicine continues to receive limited attention at German universities. This observation was made by the Hamburg-based student group "Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM)," which subsequently decided to launch a survey regarding tropical medicine education in Germany. The aim is to identify ways in which this education can be optimized and to give greater visibility to the subject's significance. The project is a collaboration between UAEM and the NTD Committee.

4)        NTD Youth Ambassador Program

Lead: Dr. med. Mirna Abd El Aziz & Dr. med. Sophie Schneitler

In 2025, in cooperation with the German Network Against Neglected Tropical Diseases (DNTDs), the first German "NTD Youth Ambassador" program was established. The goal is to introduce young people to policy, advocacy, and public relations work concerning NTDs, and to provide them with a platform for networking and professional development.

5)        German NTD Youth Initiative

Lead: Jonas Lohmann & Leonie Maier 

NTDs disproportionately affect children and young people. It is therefore all the more important to give them a voice. The German NTD Youth Initiative was originally founded as a youth initiative within the Young DTG and will continue to exist as an independent Working Group within the new NTD Committee, in cooperation with the Young DTG.

The NTD Youth Initiative has been - and remains - actively involved in establishing an international "NTD Youth Initiative" network. Through regular meetings and collaborations with global youth initiatives, the networking of young people is strengthened in order to ensure their demands regarding the fight against NTDs are heard.

One outcome of this collaboration is the "Global NTDs Youth Platform," led by the Japanese "NTDs Youth Organization":

6)        Webinar Series: "NTDs Around the World"

These interdisciplinary webinars shine a spotlight on various countries and regions, as well as the NTDs prevalent within them. The topics are examined from a variety of perspectives: clinical practice, research, public health, diagnostics, One Health, and more.

The webinar series is held in cooperation with FESTMIH.
